These three volumes are a treasure trove for genealogists throughout the tri-state region, as many residents of Johnson County (Tennessee) had migrated from the adjoining states of Virginia and North Carolina. Five years after the close of the Civil War, Johnson County’s 1,046 families yielded a population of 5,846. Three decades later, the 1900 census revealed the near doubling of that total. With 1,939 families, Johnson County was home to 10,639 citizens. Ten more years brought the total to 2,712 families for a population of 13,194 in 1910.
All three volumes provide name, age, gender, race, and birthplace of each person. The 1900 and 1910 censuses also include each individual’s relationship to the head of the household and the birthplace of his or her parents. Individuals with professional or unusual occupations are so noted. These range from servant, preacher, and U.S. Congressman in the 1880 census to lumberman, railroad engineer, and telephone operator in the census of 1910.
