The Battle of Cowpens
A Documented Narrative and Troop Movement Maps
Edwin Cole Bearss
In mid-December 1780, General Nathanael Greene made a military decision that led to a decisive battle in our nation’s struggle for independence. This bloody conflict would hearten the Patriots and cast a pall of gloom over the British army and their Tory sympathizers. Facing a superior British force under General Cornwallis, Greene divided his army, sending Brigadier General Daniel Morgan west of the Catawba River. Cornwallis’ favorite cavalry officer, Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton, followed Morgan. Bearss recounts the complex strategies that led to one of the great battles of the American Revolution. When the opposing forces clashed on a lightly wooded field on a bitter Wednesday morning, January 17, 1781, Morgan carried the day with his astute military tactics and bold leadership. The victory tarnished Tarleton’s command and weakened the British presence in the South. This book details the troop movements and strategies of a battle that would foreshadow the Patriot victory at Yorktown.
